Data ownership is broken. Whilst national governments are not yet owning up to the responsibility of building public service alternatives to big data corporations, some cities around the world are testing new approaches in putting people back in control of their data and using it for the public good.

This session will discuss how we can encourage our municipalities to build a global network of locally owned and controlled data commons:

The DECODE project was piloted in Amsterdam and Barcelona between 2017 and 2019. It has been celebrated as one approach toward a participatory, inclusive and democracy building smart cities and data commons. During this session the outcomes of the project will be discussed together with the question how cities can lead the way in building citizen owned data commons. In particuar, the session will take a look at the work of Civic Tech Hubs aiming to innovate administration, local policies and data infrastructures.

The format of this session will be a 25minute interview between Franscesca and Geraldine on the results of the decode project in Amsterdam and Barcelona and the way ahead in buidling a global network of citizen controlled data commons.
